Background
Time for Bed received a referral for a single-parent family with six children, aged between five and 15 years. The family had recently moved into a new home, which required numerous repairs still pending by the landlord. At the time, none of the children had their own bed and were sleeping on a mix of mattresses, sofas, and the floor. Two of the children have disabilities and special educational needs, a factor that exasperated the issues experienced by the family.
At the time of the move, the family was being supported by the Learning Mentor at the children’s primary school and an Early Help/Prevention Manager at the local council, who reached out to Time for Bed to provide the family with essential support.
What we did
Time for Bed worked closely with both support agencies to fulfil this referral. The organisation provided the family with all the bedding they required, including two sets of bunk beds and two single beds, each complete with duvets, pillows, and bedding. The beds were delivered and assembled, ensuring each child had a comfortable place to sleep. This support meant that all six children now have their own beds, bringing stability and much-needed comfort to their home.
Outcome
Since receiving their beds, teachers at the children’s school have observed improvements in attendance, punctuality, and engagement during lessons, with the children benefiting from higher quality sleep. The impact on their social and emotional wellbeing has been significant, with the family expressing heartfelt gratitude for the support.
The children are excited about their new beds, and their mother looks forward to decorating each bedroom in the children’s chosen colours, creating a space that truly feels like home.
This case highlights the profound impact a simple bed can have on children’s wellbeing, school success, and overall happiness. Time for Bed’s support has not only provided a practical solution but also given this family a renewed sense of stability and comfort.
